Nevertheless, if you understand the common injuries and patterns in a sport, then you can go a long way in preventing them. Also, by better understanding injury patterns and stresses, you will be better able to design effective rehabilitation programs if the athlete does get injured. Sport Demands Analysis A method that I use to analyze the overall demands of team sports is the focal point approach. Looking for a focal point in a sport has helped me to focus on the key movements and key positions and then condition accordingly.

But these terms can limit us and lock us into the same pattern of looking at muscles rather than movements. In their classic text Kinesiology, last published in 1970, Logan and McKinney proposed the use of terminology that fits with our contemporary understanding of muscle function. Their logic in proposing a shift in terminology is as on target today as when they first articulated it: The terms agonist, antagonist, synergist, and fixator are used to describe muscle action. But these terms do not describe muscle actions because they have been used in a context that has not considered the effects of gravity as well as other external forces acting on and within the body.

To effectively perform, the athlete must train to perform on the competition surface. The key to performance is the ability to import force into the ground, whatever surface, and in turn derive appropriate useable ground reaction. The ability to control and use ground reaction force has implications in regard to movement mechanics, strength training, injury prevention, and rehabilitation. To design and implement effective training and rehabilitation programs, you need to understand how to use and control ground reaction force.
