Many of these areas, and indeed districts within the areas, have developed their own breeds of mountain sheep; some of these breeds such as the Herdwick and the Derbyshire Gritstone are very localized, whereas others such as the Scottish Blackface and the Cheviot are widespread. In some of the more important breeds distinctive strains have been developed ; thus the North Country Cheviot, found mainly in the north of Scotland, is a larger animal than the Cheviot and is recognized as a separate breed ; again there are two distinct types of Scottish Blackface—the Lanark type and the finer boned, lighter fleeced, Newton Stewart type.

T h e benefits of alternate husbandry may be summarized as follows : (a) It has often been pointed out that soil structure is the key to soil fertility ; of all the cultivations that a farmer carries out, ploughing is the only one that can be said to improve soil structure. g. the Kansas Dust Bowl. T h e structure of the soil is built up in a number of ways, but one of the most effective is by grass roots : evidence of this is to be seen in the strongly structured A horizons of the Chernozems. One of the main objects of alternate husbandry is to allow the structure of the soil to be built up under a period of grass so that it can withstand cash-cropping for a number of years.
