Little historical research has been on the immigrant community. One social work professional reports that the best ways to get information to Bangladeshis in New York are to put notices in the community grocery stores and to speak to the imams, their religious leaders.

Initially most peddlers sold rosaries, other religious items, and knickknacks: things that could be carried in a pack. Most soon learned enough English to claim that they came from "the Holy Land" (although few were actually from Palestine), which gave a special appeal to their religious items. As peddlers became more prosperous, they progressed to using horse and wagon, and later the automobile, and could carry larger and more varied items. Many if not most peddlers eventually became store owners or operators.
